SUS 2022 Presidential Address – Kasper S. Wang, MD

Kasper S. Wang, MD gives his 2022 SUS Presidential Address “Beyond a Pipe Dream:  Expanding the URM Pipeline” during the 2022 Academic Surgical Congress.

Kasper S. Wang, MD

Dr. Kasper S. Wang is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the Johns Hopkins University in 1989, Dr. Wang earned his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency and a research fellowship at Stanford University Hospital. Dr. Wang completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at CHLA in 2004 and subsequently joined the faculty. In addition to a busy clinical practice encompassing the full breadth of pediatric surgery, Dr. Wang heads clinical and basic research programs studying pediatric liver diseases  such as biliary atresia, a congenital cholangiopathy that is the leading cause of end-stage liver failure in children.

Dr. Wang is the Principal Investigator for a now thrice NIH-funded U01 grant for the Childhood Liver Disease Research Network. With over a hundred peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Wang has co-authored several publications in high impact journals such as JAMA, Nature Communications, Cell, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Hepatology, Pediatrics, and Journal of Pediatrics. In addition to serving as SUS President, Dr. Wang has previously served as the Publications Chair and the Liaison to the American College of Surgeons Surgical Research Council. Dr. Wang is currently the Vice Chair of the Pediatric Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery, the Chair of the Western Pediatric Surgery Research Consortium and the Associate Chief of the CHLA Division of Pediatric Surgery. He has previously served as Acting Chief of the Division and as a Director of the CHLA Medical Group Board of Directors.
